Taking out the Christmas Tree

The National Fire Protection Association recommends prompt removal and disposal of Christmas trees, which are flammable objects, after the holidays are over. According to National Fire Protection Association statistics, 40% of Christmas tree home fires happen in January.

New State Laws Taking Effect on January 1

According to an email blast from State Senator Marty Golden's office, these new state laws go into effect as of January 1, 2015:

Hire a Veteran Tax Credit – Businesses will get a tax credit for hiring qualified veterans equal to 10% of the total wages during the veteran's first year of employment. The credit is increased to 15% for disabled veterans. The credit is capped at $5,000 per veteran

After Plea, Grimm Refuses to Resign

Reuters reports that U.S. Representative Michael Grimm (R 11th CD) has refused to resign from Congress after entering a guilty plea in Brooklyn Federal District Court today. Grimm noted that he was easily re-elected to a third term in November, despite facing a 20-count federal indictment.

Grimm Cops a Plea

Reuters reports that U.S. Representative Michael Grimm (R-11th CD) will enter a guilty plea in Brooklyn Federal Court tomorrow to resolve the array of federal tax fraud and other charges pending against him.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires due to holiday candles and decorations peak this month, with Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day the top three days for these fires.

DSNY Recruiting Emergency Snow Laborers

According to a posting in the December 18 edition of the Brooklyn Spectator, the City Department of Sanitation is now registering emergency snow removal laborers at its district garages in all of the five boroughs and at the DSNY Flatbush Yard at 2900 Flatbush Avenue.

Bay Ridge Tops Brooklyn in Rent Increases

According to AMNY, a new report from real estate firm MNS showed average monthly rent increases in Bay Ridge topping every other Brooklyn neighborhood last month.



Bay Ridge saw a 9.4% spike in average rents for studios and one-bedroom apartments in October compared to the same month last year. An average studio in Bay Ridge rented for $1,389 last month, compared to $1,157 just a year ago.

Subway Ridership Broke Records this Year

Subway ridership in New York City is at record levels. Last month, the record for single-day ridership was broken five times. On Tuesday, September 23, 6,106,694 customers rode the subway: the highest ridership on record. 8th Annual Senior Idol Competition at Xaverian
