Parking Lots as Shared Public Spaces

According to one study, there are eight parking spots for every car in America, and 30 for every resident of Houston, Texas.

In his 2012 book “Rethinking a Lot,” MIT urban planning professor Eran Ben-Joseph points out that parking lots cover more than a third of the land area in some U.S. cities, which he calls the "single most salient landscape feature of our built environment.” There could
