The Gentrification of a "Plague-Stricken Spot"

Posted on 6:42 PM by ram

An 1833 Quarantine on Staten Island.

Writing for BKLYNR, a subscription-based indie site, Bay Ridge journalist Henry Stewart revisits the 19th century Yellow Fever epidemic that led to Bay Ridge's emergence as the "Greenwich Village of Brooklyn."

One of the most feared diseases of the 18th and 19th centuries, Yellow Fever is believed to have followed the slave trade out of Africa, killing

Bay Ridge Democrats' Post-Mortem at the Bridgeview

Posted on 3:14 PM by ram

In an email blast to its members, the Bay Ridge Democrats asked the pertinent question what happens, now that Republicans have seized control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress and the New York State Senate, in an election that saw a Republican overthrow of Congress for the first time in 8 years, and the state's lowest voter turnout since the early 1970s?

The club will convene a special

Will Democrats remember, four years down the road, Daily News columnist Juan Gonzalez wondered, how Machiavellian Andrew Cuomo sailed to a second term as governor by throwing progressives under the bus?

To wrest the Working Families Party endorsement away from progressive Democrat Zephyr Teachout, Cuomo made a deal with the WFP's backers, including labor unions and other progressive groups, to

A Grimm Reality

Posted on 6:24 AM by ram

In a race that one Staten Island voter, interviewed by the Daily News, characterized as a contest between a "guy who can't speak" and a "criminal", the criminal won.

Conservative/Republican Congressional Representative Michael Grimm won a third term in a Republican-dominated U.S. House of Representatives yesterday, largely thanks to the Staten Island end of the 11th CD.

The Disappeared

Posted on 7:39 PM by ram
"Mid-Life Missing Persons", an item from Daily News columnist Linda Stasi, is the first mainstream media mention I've seen of something I've puzzled over in recent years: has the number of missing people in New York City been going up, or are we simply more aware of the disappearances now due to the proliferation of social media outlets like Facebook?

A Choice We Can't Afford to Make

Posted on 8:02 AM by ram

A cynical Daily News Editorial Board, chanting "Anybody but Recchia", has recklessly endorsed federally-indicted Conservative/Republican Michael Grimm over Democratic challenger Domenic Recchia in the bitterly-contested, high-stakes congressional race in the 11th CD.

While desperate times, as the Daily News says, call for desperate measures, the times aren't so desperate as to justify
